Massachusetts Auto Insurance

Massachusetts is a “No Fault” state. That means that every driver is required to purchase Personal Injury Protection, PIP, in which the driver’s auto insurance company covers injury-related expenses and associated costs as a result of an accident regardless who is at fault. This insures that every motorist will receive immediate medical attention. Also, this limits a driver from suing or being sued for damages as a result of an accident in most cases. However, based on the severity of the accident/injury or monetary amount, if you are at fault you may be subject to a lawsuit for damages.

Minimum Coverage

$20,000 injury liability coverage per person for an accident you cause, up to $40,000 for all injuries from that accident (that would be the first two injured people to apply for damages), and $5,000 property damage coverage caused to the other party.

Compulsory Coverage—The required minimum PIP coverage, $8,000, for you, your passengers, pedestrians, or anyone you allow to drive your vehicle. However, some drivers will opt for a high deductible that will reduce this coverage amount in exchange for a lower annual insurance premium.

Uninsured motorist insurance policy that requires a minimum of $20,000 per person, $40,000 per accident to at least cover you and one other person with a minimum amount of $20,000 coverage.

MA motorists are required to maintain a liability insurance policy.

Although MA takes the driving records of all MA motorists and divides the costs (includes legal fees, settlements, and administrative costs) between the drivers, it still pays to be a responsible driver. This is because the percentage of annual premiums you end up paying is determined by your age, driving record, type of car driven and residence.

Since insurance companies use different methods of computing a driver’s auto insurance premium, it does pay to shop around for a policy with the best coverage at the lowest price. The good news is that shopping on-line and comparing quotes is relatively easy. Get instant quotes online here!
